Theatre News

FOUR talented youngsters from Cumbernauld have been chosen from hundreds of hopefuls to star in an adaptation of the exciting musical Hot Mikado. The production, which is in rehearsals at the moment, opens in Glasgow at The Tramway's largest theatre space, Tramway One, on Thursday August 17 for three nights Russell Ferguson (13), of Eastfield, Louise McMenemy (17) of Balloch, Ben McCarthy (nine), of Muirhead, and Kathryn Wright (12) of Westerwood, attend classes at UKTheatreSchool and impressed the Casting Director, Alasdair Hawthorn, with their abilities and were immediately given parts in the show. Students at UKTheatreSchool are between the ages of four and twenty-one and are from all over Scotland. UKTheatreSchool Managing Director Lizanne Thomson said: "The atmosphere at rehearsals is electric." The show will follow the original script but will be set in a New York 1940's night club. You can expect East meets West in this hilarious 1940's-style updating of the Gilbert & Sullivan classic, with the music transmuted into blues, Cab Calloway swing, hot gospel, scorching torch songs and Three Little Maids turned into an Andrews Sisters' show stopper. It should be an ideal evening out for the whole family.

Lovely UKTheatreSchool student ZoŽ Coutts, who is just 6 years old, was recently awarded the leading part in the new KFC advert. ZoŽ was chosen from thousands of hopefuls and got down to the final four along with another terrific UKTheatreSchool student Brooke McDonnell age 7 years. Unfortunately both of them couldn't get the part and the casting directors had a very difficult time choosing. On speaking to Brooke she very politely said ĎI was a bit upset it wasnít me but I am glad it was someone from theatre schoolí. Brookeís a great student and very talented so no doubt she will be up for further castings. As you can imagine ZoŽ was absolutely delighted. She was flown to London where the advert was filmed and she had the time of her life. ZoŽ said she did like KFC but she likes it even better now. The advert is now being aired so when you see the little girl in the latest KFC advert doing the hovering and the cleaning up youíll now know itís ZoŽ from UKTheatreSchool. United Casting who handled the contract for ZoŽ is also delighted at such a high profile casting (please ask for further information on joining our Casting Agency).
